I am a graduating senior in the B.A. Philanthropic Studies major in the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI). My passion is community health, specifically improving the health of minority populations. My academic career at IUPUI has challenged me to discover my true calling, gain necessary skills, and find out what it truly means to live a philanthropic life. This profile serves to display my educational experience and completion of Philanthropic Studies learning outcomes as well as IUPUI’s Principles of Undergraduate Learning (PULs). This portfolio is organized into categories. Each category contains one or more artifacts as well as an explanation as to why and how each artifact contributes to my academic career and completion of learning outcomes.
This portfolio on its own is an example of a course objective: demonstrate communication skills by writing effectively for varied audiences, presenting information to others to inform action. Through an internship with Growing Places Indy, along with classroom discussions in other courses, I was able to complete the Philanthropic Studies Capstone learning objective: Explore the values, ethics, and commitments of leaders, and articulate an emerging sense of how you will work with and lead others in your personal and professional lives and contribute to the common good. This work is displayed under the tab “Learning Outcome #4” because it showcases my ability to use communication skills effectively for varied audiences. During the internship I worked with children, adults, people from different socioeconomic statuses and my peers in order to learn and complete projects. This required having a set of communication skills. Two examples of meeting the course objective: “Express a coherent understanding of Philanthropic Studies by articulating knowledge, skills, and dispositions you have gained through experiences and coursework at IUPUI” can be found under the tab Learning Outcome #6: Articulating philanthropic values, civic identity, and strategies for increasing capacity to take action. My philanthropic autobiography and professional plan display my educational understanding of philanthropy as well as how I see myself in the realm of civic identity and my plan of action. My completion of course objective: “Gain authority and confidence in what you have learned and share this knowledge with others to influence positive change” is displayed through Learning Outcome 5. The artifacts in that category are my work in the fields of ministry and health. Those are my passions and the artifacts display that I have done due diligence in the realm of philanthropy to which I feel called and I have shared that information with others.
Something unique about my experience at IUPUI has been my ability to have experiential learning through internships with Growing Places Indy and Lakeland Regional Health Foundation. I have been able to meet many nonprofit owners and passionate philanthropists through my time in class as well as outside of class. This has allowed me to discuss philanthropy, nonprofit work, calling, and business with many people. That opportunity challenged me to get a grasp on exactly who I am as a person, philanthropist, citizen, friend, and world changer. I am currently an intern for Lakeland Regional Health Foundation and my career goal is to work for an organization that is improving minority health locally. Throughout the work displayed in this portfolio, a dedication to health as well as ministry will be evident. This portfolio is a journey through my academic career and shows my successful completion of learning objectives and outcomes for Philanthropic Studies Capstone and the B.A. Philanthropic Studies program.
