The Capstone Research Project allowed me to dig deep into an issue that I care about: community and minority health. Through researching the topic, I was challenged to hone my skills on Learning Outcome 3. I researched what current nonprofits were doing in the community which allowed me to identify the size, scope, types, roles, and limitations of nonprofit organizations in health in Polk County, FL. I was also able to see how nonprofits were executing their role within different sectors to secure and utilize resources to address social issues by looking at articles and piecing together what nonprofit organizations were doing such as the implementation of grocery stores in low income areas and medical professional offering free services to assist the community members in need. A good amount of my research was spent identifying and defining the community need as well as the role of social relationships in philanthropy. I found that a great amount of community members see the need and people from different sectors even cam together to form Polk Vision, a group that is working together to improve their community in all areas. I noticed a missing element in the health nonprofit sector within Polk County and Central Florida. Fresh food, gardening, and healthy food were not made priorities. They were not part of the push for better health. Looking at different cities and countries, I was shocked at the amount of resources available on the topic of community health and minority health in regards to fresh, healthy food. It was exciting and inpsiring to see that many people are out there trying to make a difference in this area through gardening, farm stands, vegetable share programs, and more. I am pushed even more to pursue my passion and help my community.
