Student Leadership Institute Sessions

Delegate vs. Dictate

This session distinguished the difference between delegating work to others and being a dictator. I found this session to be very informational because as I take on more leadership roles in student organizations and in my life in general, it is important to be able to delegate work to others to get things done effectively and efficiently. Being a dictator is not the best way of leading others, so it is important to be able to delegate your tasks in a way that others will respond well to and get the work done properly.

ZAP Panel

This panel taught me more about the LGBTQ community not only on the Ithaca College campus, but also as a whole. Prior to this session I did not have much knowledge of this community or what it was like, but it has given me a greater depth of the issues that they face and how to be respectful of these issues. I know that it is sometimes hard for members of the LGBTQ community to speak out so I have a lot of respect for those who chose to speak to educate others. Since I was so unaware of this community before, now having a wider knowledge of LGBTQ issues I am now more informed so I can be aware in the future.

Time Budgeting

At this session we began by filling out a chart with all the things we have scheduled to do on a daily basis. After filling in classes, work, meals and workouts we were able to visually see the blocks of time we have in our day-to-day lives. Even though I use my calendar in my phone to keep track of the things I have scheduled every day when I filled out this chart it made me realize the periods of time that I could use more effectively, even if I only have a half hour. I realized that I would just follow my daily routine schedule and if I only had an hour or less in between things I wouldn't accomplish anything thinking it wasn't enough time to start something. This made me realize I should break up the things I have to do for work and classes into smaller chunks so that I could do them in a smaller time frame to get things done more effectively.
