Student Leadership Institute Sessions

Wellness Wednesdays: Intergroup Dialogue Series (3 sessions)

This SLI was a series of group discussions held in the month of April. During these sessions we discussed various cultural and social issues that have been featured in the news lately such as Ferguson and the Indiana "religious freedom" law. We were able to talk about our individual views and opinions on these topics as well as how this relates to the environment here at Ithaca College. I really enjoyed being able to hear some of the other student's opinions and experiences relating to these issues and the ability to share my own. It was a great way to be able to disucss issues in a somewhat more formal setting while still being an informal converstaion. This allowed me to become more aware of others' opinions and how to be respectful of those.

Altar Appirations: Artist Talk with Mercedes Dorame

This event was held in the Handwerker Gallery and was an artist talk by one of the visiting exhibition's artists. It was really interesting to be able to hear the artist talk about her work and the inspiration behind the pieces she created. I have never gone to a gallery and been able to hear first-hand the meaning behind certain pieces so this gave my experience a new perspective. Dorame talked about how she works on historical sites and how her culture has had a major impact on her work. This gave me a greater appreciation for the work she created and the significance of it.

Say NO to Procrastination

This session was about the importance of getting tested for colorectal cancer and taught me more information about reducing my chance of getting this form on cancer. This session was very informative as I did not have a lot of knowledge about this type of cancer prior to this session and I was able to learn a lot of information.
