RIDE ACROSS AMERICA

Introduction

 

This lesson was developed by elementary education majors of Lees-McRae College. (Mel Alexander, Kathy Brintle, Kelly Doncsecz, Karen Long, and Angie Ward.

 

This webquest focuses on a Ride Across America.  During this ride, five areas near national parks will be studied.  (Bar Harbor, ME; Asheville, NC; Black Hills, SD; Grand Canyon AZ; and San Francisco, CA).

 

This lesson is for fifth grade.  Subjects studied are:  history, geography, science, arts/culture, and math.

 

Process

 

  1. Get in groups of five.
  2. Choose roles:
    1. Historian
    2. Geographer
    3. Scientist
    4. Arts/cultural director
    5. Mathematics coordinator
  3. Research questions via the websites provided.  Questions will be based on the five areas of Bar Harbor, Asheville, Black Hills, Grand Canyon, and San Francisco.  There will be two questions on each area for every role. (Total of 50 questions).
  4. Print out answers and glue onto folder paper.  Each person will make a travel pamphlet that will be placed in the group’s scrapbook. Be creative!
  5. The group will present their scrapbook in class.

 

 

This lesson will be done in the classroom in thirty minute time periods during approximately five days.
