ECI 309 focuses on language acquisition and emergent literacy for children, birth through third grade.  This course examines appropriate contexts, including cross-cultural contexts that support childrenπs language and literacy development.

ECI 310 focuses on language and literacy development, from kindergarten through eighth grade.  This course supports instruction in childrenπs language development, reading, writing, and language arts with current and classical research.

There is one artifact required for ECI 309 & 310, the Integrated Literacy Block:

1. Essay

Assignment Instructions: Compose an essay that explains how you, as a teacher, would teach/facilitate a child to read and write (literacy skills). The content of your essay should address the following elements:

• An understanding of a child’s literacy development (Your beliefs on how children learn and become literate)

• How to establish a literate environment (Your understanding of how to establish a classroom environment which will support literacy development)

• Teaching and learning strategies or methods (Your Reading and writing practice sand learning experiencese and why you have specifically chosen these)

• Assessment (Your assessment of children’s literacy and how this will guide your planning and instruction)
