The purpose of this Toolbox is to demonstrate knowledge of how to educate learners with special needs so that students are serviced in the most appropriate way while remaining in compliance with what the laws have set forth in IDEA 2004.The charts that are available for viewing reflect knowledge of what a teacher can do to better educate a student with a special need and what placement may be appropriate.
This assignment shows mastery of the Arizona’s Professional Teaching Standard 9, Indicator 5 that requires the teacher to demonstrate current professional knowledge sufficient to effectively design and plan instruction, implement and manage instruction, create and maintain an appropriate learning environment, and assess student learning. The special education teacher participates in the design, implementation, and assessment of individualized education programs in order to develop a student’s abilities, which is imperative in the high school setting. In order to achieve this, the special education teacher needs to be knowledgeable of different special needs, available placement options for recommendation to the IEP team, and what teaching methods may work for the different needs of students. Indicator 5 requires teachers to use methods for recognizing and accommodating exceptional children. This toolbox is one method to achieve the mastery of Arizona’s Professional Teaching Standard 9.
Mastery of the USA- ISLLC - Standards for School Leaders (With Competencies) Standard 1, Area of Performance which states that a school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community. By demonstrating knowledge of information sources, data collection, and data analysis strategies to ensure that the teacher is following state and federal special education laws, rules, and regulations. By maintaining a collection of resources, the educational leader promotes the success of all students by collaborating with families and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.

The special education teacher participates in the design, implementation, and assessment of individualized education programs in order to develop a student’s abilities, which is imperative in the high school setting. In order to achieve this, the special education teacher needs to be knowledgeable of state and federal special education laws, rules, and regulations. This must be achieved to meet the Arizona standards and the transition from school to work or post-secondary education. Indicator 5 requires that the teacher pursue professional activities to support development as a learner and a teacher in the form of advanced degree ascertainment through documented research.
Mastery of the USA- ISLLC - Standards for School Leaders (With Competencies) Standard 4, Area of Performance has also been demonstrated by knowledge of the success of all students by understanding, responding to, and influencing the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context. This understanding is demonstrated through documented research of procedures as well as community resources available to schools as well as parents and students.
