Context: I attended this workshop on January 22nd, as a required seminar for all Glenwood Elementary teachers. This workshop was entitled Differentiated Instruction- Math Based, and was led by Mrs. Elaine Haven.
Impact: The focus of this workshop was to teach teachers how to vary their instruction to meet the needs of all students. Every student has a different learning style, and it is our job as teachers to make sure that we reach each and every student in our class. It is also becoming more common knowledge that the more hands on activities a student does, the better. They will be more likely to retain the knowledge if they can manipulate things while learning it. This workshop gave me many different activities for my students to do individually, in small group, or as a whole class, that involve hands on activities.
Alignment:
NCDPI Standards
Standard 9: Elementary teachers understand and use the processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connection, and representation as the foundation for the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Indicator 1: Elementary teachers develop instruction in problem solving that enable all students to:
* Build new mathematical knowledge through problem solving;
* Solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts;
* Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems;
* Monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving.
This indicator was met through the attending of the Differentiated Instruction workshop, because at this workshop I was taught how to have students work in groups to solve problems. I was also taught how to use a variety of strategies to learn math concepts.
