Food Pyramid

Lesson Plan

Context:

This lesson plan was created during student teaching, under the guidance of Mrs. Carrie Franklin.  It is designed for a first grade class, and addresses the importance of healthful living, especially when it pertains to making healthy food choices.

Impact:

Healthful Living - First Grade:
Competency Goal 4: The learner will apply knowledge and behavior self management skills to areas of nutrition and physical activity for healthy growth, development, and maintenance.

4.01 Categorize foods into the appropriate groups of My Pyramid.

4.02 Identify a variety of foods that are healthy choices in each of the food groups.

Alignment:

NCDPI:
Standard 5: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the major concepts of healthful living.
Indicator 1: Teachers understand the foundations of good heath and help students understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
This indicator was met because, through this lesson plan, my students learn what are good food choices, and what are not.  Learning this at a young age will help them be healthier people as they grow older.
Indicator 2: Teachers are alert to major health issues related to children.
One of the biggest issues facing children today is obesity.  Teaching them how to decipher which foods are good or bad will help conquer this problem.  They will not be overweight if they learn now how to make good food choices
