Routines and Procedures

Context: This is a write up explaining all of the routines and procedures that are in place for Glenwood Elementary, as well as Carrie Franklin's classroom.  It follows the routines that are in practice during my time as a student teacher, in the Spring of 2008.  This writeup touches on daily safety routines, as well as the procedures for Fire Drills, Tornado Drills, and Lockdown procedures.

Impact:  By having both long and short term plans for school safety, we are able to keep our students safe and can be prepared for anything that comes our way.  Not only are we as teachers aware of what should happen during these events, but our students know exactly what it is that they are to do.  If one of our students was to be alone in the hallway during a fire drill, lockdown, or tornado drill, then they would know exactly what it is that they should do, due to the modeling and practicing that we have done with them.

Alignment:
Standard 17: Elementary teachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement practices in the classroom.
Indicator 4: Teachers model and communicate appropriate safety behaviors.
This writeup shows the various forms of drills that we conduct as classroom teachers with our students.  We model exactly what it is that they should do for each of the drills so that they will be confident in what steps should be taken, were they to be alone in the hall during an emergency situation.
Indicator 5: Teachers develop a short and long-term plan for improvement of school safety.
The writeup included as my artifact for this indicator discusses the plans that have been, and are still being developed to ensure the safety of the students.  During the time that I have been student teaching at Glenwood Elementary, the staff has met twice in regards to the lockdown procedures.  Each time, they are working to improve the way in which the school operates during the lockdown.  I am seeing the new plan as well as how things grow and develop in order to be even stronger.
