Safety Issues in the Classroom

Context: This writeup was completed as a part of my Student Teaching experience, Spring of 2008, under the guidance of Ms. Carrie Franklin.  It discusses the health of one of my students, who has a severe allergy to peanuts, and the constant awareness that we have to have of her situation.  The teachers, the students, and the child herself, are all constantly looking out for her, to ensure that she is kept safe.

Impact: This writeup will obviously benefit my students, and one in particular.  Being aware of situations is a very important part of being a teacher.  We have to make sure the cafeteria doesn't accidentally give our student food that she may have a reaction too, we have to make sure that her food doesn't touch a desk where a peanut has been, even simple things like, checking labels to make sure foods weren't cooked in peanut oil.  This is also giving my students a great opportunity to think about things in a more critical light than they previously would have.

Alignment:
NCDPI Standards
Standard 17: Elementary teachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement practices in the classroom.
Indicator 1: Teachers ensure that safety issues are included in instruction and provide supervision during lab activities and field experiences.
This standard was met through the everyday routines put in place in order to protect the health of one of my students.  One of the children in my class has an allergy to peanuts.  We have altered lesson plans, monitored her health, and made sure that nothing in the cafeteria will have an adverse affect on her.  Being aware of her surroundings and knowledgeable about the treatment (Epi Pen) in the case of a reaction, helps us keep her safe.
