Context: This was a training session sponsored by the McDowell County Health Department, focusing on nutrition and health in the elementary schools. It was held at Glenwood Elementary on March 3rd, 2008.
Impact: The focus of the "Integrated Nutrition Curriculum" is to make a way for teachers to teach Health Education to their students without having to miss out on other subjects. There is such an emphasis on the 'tested' subjects, and this program integrates health, so that these subjects will not be ignored. It is very useful and will greatly benefit my students because many of the students at my school are considered "At Risk" or "Overweight". Being able to have nutrition taught will help lower this number and keep my students healthy.
Alignment:
NCDPI Standards
Standard 13: Working alone, or with healthful living specialists, elementary teachers create opportunities for student development and practice of skills that contribute to good health.
This standard was met through my attending of the "Integrated Nutrition Curriculum" training session. This session taught me how to integrate the health curriculum into my everyday classroom environment.
