Plant Lesson Plan

Context: This is a lesson plan that was created for a first grade class.  It was taught Spring of 2008, during my student teaching experience, under the guidance of Ms. Carrie Franklin.  This lesson plan focuses on plants, the parts of a plant, and the life cycle of a plant.

Impact:
Science - First Grade

Competency Goal 1: The learner will conduct investigations and make observations to build an understanding of the needs of living organisms.
1.01 Investigate the needs of a variety of different plants:

  • Air.
  • Water.
  • Light.
  • Space.

Mathematics - First Grade

Competency Goal 2: The learner will use non-standard units of measure and tell time.
2.01     For given objects:

  1. Select an attribute (length, capacity, mass) to measure  (use non-standard units).
  2. Develop strategies to estimate size.
  3. Compare, using appropriate language, with respect to the attribute selected.

Alignment:
NCDPI Standards -
Standard 3: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.
Indicator 1: Teachers have knowledge of basic life science concepts including:

  • Characteristics of living things
  • Diversity of organisms and their environments
  • Life cycles, mutations, and adaptations
  • Structure and function of plants, animals, and their parts
  • Growth and development of organisms
  • Health and human biology
  • Relationship between humans, organisms, and the environment (ecology)

This standard was met through the teaching of the "Parts of a plant" lesson plan.  In this lesson plan, students learn the life cycle of a plant, the various things a plant needs to live and grow (water, soil, sunlight, etc.), and can label the various parts of a plant.  Through this lesson, students learn the structure of plants, growth of organisms, characteristics of living things, and life cycles.
