Story Pictures

Context:  This story pictures assignment was created for CI 3750, Integrating Media and Technology into the classroom, Spring 2007, under the instruction of Jeff Goodman.  This lesson was based on taking pictures, sequencing them, and writing a story to explain the order.  The story pictures assignment integrates subjects including language arts and technology.

Impact: The following North Carolina Standard Course of Study standards were met through the completion of this project:

Computer Technology Grade 5
Competency Goal 1: The learner will understand important issues of a technology-based society and will exhibit ethical behavior in the use of computer and other technologies.
1.12 Recognize and explain the advantages and disadvantages of using multimedia to develop content area projects/products.

Language Arts Grade 5

Competency Goal 4: The learner will apply strategies and skills to create oral, written, and visual texts.

4.05 Use a variety of preliminary strategies to plan and organize the writing and speaking task considering purpose, audience, and timeline.

4.10 Use technology as a tool to enhance and/or publish a product

Competency Goal 5: The learner will apply grammar and language conventions to communicate effectively.

5.06 Proofread for accuracy of spelling using appropriate strategies to confirm spelling and to correct errors.
5.07 Edit final product for grammar, language conventions, and format.
5.08 Create readable documents through legible handwriting (cursive) and word processing.

Alignment:  The story pictures assignment helps me as a teacher meet the following standards:

NETS-T Technology Standards

Standard II: Planning and designing learning environments and experiences.
A - Design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
This assignment accommodates for various learning styles including visual (looking at pictures) and writing (both on a computer using word processing, and on paper).  This helps students who may do better when typing, but also requires students to write their responses by hand.

Standard IV: Assessment and Evaluation

A - Apply techniques in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
This standard is met because, each child is turning their computer generated story pictures in by saving it onto a computer.  This way I will be able to provide feedback to them on the powerpoint itself.

C - apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity
This standard was met because the rubric that was included with the Story Pictures assignment had a portion of it devoted to evaluating the student's use of technology.  The students are required to use technology both in the videotaping portion as well as the editing portion of the video making process.

Standard VI: Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues
D - promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
It is difficult for students to sit for a long period of time.  As a part of this assigment, students are encouraged to stretch while sitting at a computer for long periods of time.  This will help as far as health goes, but also as far as keeping students on task is concerned.
E - facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
The story pictures assignment meets this standard because the project is to be done with partners.  This was a technologically savvy student could be paired with someone who is not as familiar with computers.  This powerpoint and pictures can be printed in order to help students who may not be able to use the computer.

NC Standards for Elementary Teachers:

Standard 7: Elementary teachers use developmentally appropriate strategies to design and deliver instruction in all areas of the elementary curriculum.

Indicator 2 - Teachers understand and use an interdisciplinary approach to teaching by connecting and integrating language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, healthful living, and arts concepts and processes, with appropriate technologies to enhance their teaching.
This standard was met because students are required to incorporate the skills they have learned in their language arts classroom, such as grammar, sentence structure, and sequencing, with technology.

Standard 8: Teachers design instructional programs and strategies that build on students' experiences and existing language skills to help students become competent, effective users of language.

Indicator 3 - Teachers guide and encourage students to think critically about what they read and write.
This standard was met because students are instructed to write a story to support the order of their pictures.  The students should put pictures in an order that requires some thought while writing their stories.
