How to Avoid "Going Through the Motions: Facilitating Interns' Use of ePortfolios for Reflection and Branding

Participants will learn creative ways to relay to students the importance of being able to identify the relevant skills gained from their experiences. The Life-Health Sciences Internship (LHSI) program at Indiana-University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) uses the ePortfolio to facilitate critical reflection in its interns to help remember important information.

Life-Health Sciences Internship Program: Motivating and Recording Reflection

We condensed our AAEEBL presentation into a printed poster for the 2016 IUPUI ePortfolio Initiative Symposium. A majority of the poster described the timeline of ePortfolio exercises that interns complete over a full year in the program, including: the pre-internship application questions, the internship agreement form, the ePortfolio prompts themselves, the January workshop activities, and the ePortfolio chats. A Peer Mentoring Model for Student Engagement, Co-Curricular Learning, and Professional Development

The Life-Health Sciences Internship Program is a framework of experiential learning for IUPUI sophomores and juniors. The program enhances student learning outside of the classroom to improve retention rates. The addition of Intern Ambassadors--previous interns who have experienced the program as peer mentors--is a model of effective peer mentoring that can be applied to other co-curricular learning initiatives.

Mentoring in the Middle: Students’ Perspectives for Generating Professional Development

In almost all facets of education, students are told that college is their time to transform into professional and responsible adults. Professors and mentors lecture their students about the importance of conducting themselves in a professional manner, but rarely go into detail about what that means. We will demonstrate how our program’s student ambassadors and staff facilitate discussion between faculty and students about developing the qualities that businesses and employers actively seek.
