In this class, we will learn how to construct simple geometric figures with just a straightedge and compass! We will discuss the history of the Pythagorean Theorem and how to use this powerful theorem. Finally, we will bridge the gap between algebra and geometry. By the end of the year, students should have developed geometric skills and concepts and the ability to make formal logical arguments and proofs.
Homework (25% of Grade – This is subject to change at teacher’s discretion)
Homework will generally be assigned every night and will include follow-up exercises from class activities/lectures that give students the opportunity to practice the standards they are to master. Late work will not be accepted unless a student has an excused absence. It is the student’s responsibility to come in for help and to ask about any assignments they may have missed the day they return to class! Students will be able to get help on assignments from the teacher before and after school.
Quizzes (10% of Grade) / Tests (30% of Grade)
Students should expect to be quizzed on the material they are learning approximately once a week. There will also be a comprehensive test at the end of each chapter, twelve in all. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule make-up quizzes and exams if they have been absent and the teacher reserves the right to dock points or refuse a make-up quiz/exam if more than a week has lapsed since the student’s absence.
Warm-Ups (5% of Grade) / Participation (10% of Grade)
Participation in this class is crucial. Students need to be able to work well in groups and participate in classroom discussions.
Projects (10% of Grade) / Final (10% of Grade)
Students will be given a variety of projects to complete at home that will help them apply the geometrical concepts they learn to real life. At the end of each semester, students will be given a comprehensive exam of all material learned that semester.
