Calculus

Course Content

In this class, students will be introduced to Calculus, an important and powerful tool that allows us to deal with real world applications in a simple and straightforward manner.  Although students in this class will be learning the same material as students in AP Calculus, please be advised that it is not recommended that students attempt the AP exam as we will be moving at a slower pace and students will not be adequately prepared in time for the exam.

Textbook

We are currently using the 5th edition of Calculus of a Single Variable published by Houghton Mifflin Company.  Each student will be taking home a book, which they may keep there since we are fortunate enough to have a class set.

Supplies

Grading Scale

(Subject to change)

Homework (20% of Grade)

Homework will generally be assigned every night and will include follow-up exercises from class activities/lectures that give students the opportunity to practice the standards they are to master.  Late work will not be accepted unless a student has an excused absence.  It is the student’s responsibility to come in for help and to ask about any assignments they may have missed the day they return to class!  Students will be able to get help on assignments from the teacher before and after school.

Quizzes (15% of Grade) / Tests (35% of Grade)

Students should expect to be quizzed on the material they are learning approximately once a week.  They should expect to be tested once or twice per chapter.  It is the student’s responsibility to make up a quiz or test if they have been absent.  The teacher can refuse to allow a student to make up a quiz/test if more than a week has lapsed since the student’s absence.

Warm-Up (7% of Grade)

Daily warm-ups will involve a written response to a prompt on the board.  Students may be asked to discuss the application of Calculus to a real world situation, explain how to solve a particular kind of problem, etc.  Warm-ups will be used to fuel discussion in class, and will be collected daily.

Projects (8% of Grade) / Final (10% of Grade) / Participation (5% of Grade)

Students will be given a variety of projects to complete at home and in the classroom that will help them apply the Calculus concepts they learn to real life.  At the end of each semester, students will be given a comprehensive exam of all material learned that semester.
