Welcome to the Civic Engagement/Google Apps tab of my electronic portfolio.  Within this section you will find many examples of my community engagement as evidenced in the artifacts of an event flyer, a mayoral proclomation, and a google web site which I created for a community organization. Subject: English Language Arts (1996)
Learning Standard 4 : Language for Social Interaction
Students will listen, speak, read, and write for social interaction.

Students will use oral and written language that follows the accepted conventions of the English language for effective social communi-cation with a wide variety of people. As readers and listeners, they will use the social communications of others to enrich their understanding of people and their views.

Level: Intermediate
Key Idea: Reading and Writing
Written communication for social interaction requires using written messages to establish, maintain, and enhance personal relationships with others.
Performance Indicator:
Write social letters, cards, and electronic messages to friends, relatives, community acquaintances, and other electronic network users
Performance Indicator:
Use appropriate language and style for the situation and the audience and take into account the ideas and inter-ests expressed by the person receiving the message
Performance Indicator:
Read and discuss social communications and electronic communications of other writers and use some of the techniques of those writers in their own writing.

Learning Standard 5 : Technology
Students will apply technological knowledge and skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems to satisfy human and environmental needs.
Level: Intermediate
Key Idea: Computer Technology 3:
Computers, as tools for design, modeling, information processing, communication, and system control, have greatly increased human productivity and knowledge.
Use computer hardware and a basic computer-aided design package to draw and dimension plans for a simple project.
Use a computer program, such as Car Builder, to model a vehicle to desired specifications.
Use temperature sensors to monitor and control the temperature of a model greenhouse.
Model a computer-controlled system, such as traffic lights, a merry-go-round, or a vehicle using Lego or other modeling hardware interfaced to a computer.
Performance Indicator:
Use a computer system to connect to and access needed information from various Internet sites.
Subject: Social Studies (1996)
Learning Standard 5 : Civics, Citizenship, and Government
Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the necessity for establishing governments; the governmental system of the U.S. and other nations; the U.S. Constitution; the basic civic values of American constitutional democracy; and the roles, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship, including avenues of participation.
Level: Intermediate
Key Idea: Central to civics and citizenship is an understanding of the roles of the citizen within American constitutional democracy and the scope of a citizen’s rights and responsibilities.
Performance Indicator:
Discuss the role of an informed citizen in today’s changing world

    This is a Google site created for a community organization to demonstrate civic engagement.

Annotation Civic Engagement/Google Apps

Annotation

1. This media project Googl Apps was created and designed by Darcy Barber in collaboration with the Director, Lead Teachers, and Assistant Teachers of Cayuga Community College Preschool.

1A. The mayoral proclamation was initiated by Darcy Barber acting as Communication Committee Chairperson of the Syracuse Association for the Education of Children. A letter was written by Darcy Barber requesting the Mayors of Syracuse and Auburn to issue a proclamation of the National Week of the Young Child, April 10-16, 2011.

1B. The event flyer was created in collaboration with Sue Goodell of Child Care Solutions CNY to promote the kick off event of the Week of the Young Child 2011.  Darcy and Sue worked closely for many weeks with multiple organizations putting this event together.

3. Technology is the major intergrated subject matter in all of these projects.

4. Objectives vary depending on the media project.

5. Children can utilize these media tools to communicate, expand their knowledge, and publish their work for others to view.
