Subject: English Language Arts (1996)
Learning Standard 4 : Language for Social Interaction
Students will listen, speak, read, and write for social interaction.

Students will use oral and written language that follows the accepted conventions of the English language for effective social communi-cation with a wide variety of people. As readers and listeners, they will use the social communications of others to enrich their understanding of people and their views.

Level: Elementary
Key Idea: Reading and Writing
Written communication for social interaction requires using written messages to establish, maintain, and enhance personal relationships with others.
Performance Indicator:
Exchange friendly notes, cards, and letters with friends, relatives, and pen pals to keep in touch and to commemorate special occasions
Performance Indicator:
Adjust their vocabulary and style to take into account the nature of the relationship and the knowledge and interests of the person receiving the message
Subject: Social Studies (1996)
Learning Standard 5 : Civics, Citizenship, and Government
Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the necessity for establishing governments; the governmental system of the U.S. and other nations; the U.S. Constitution; the basic civic values of American constitutional democracy; and the roles, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship, including avenues of participation.
Level: Elementary
Key Idea: The study of civics and citizenship requires the ability to probe ideas and assumptions, ask and answer analytical questions, take a skeptical attitude toward questionable arguments, evaluate evidence, formulate rational conclusions, and develop and refine participatory skills.
Performance Indicator:
Show a willingness to consider other points of view before drawing conclusions or making judgments
Performance Indicator:
Participate in activities that focus on a classroom, school, or community issue or problem
Performance Indicator:
Suggest alternative solutions or courses of action to hypothetical or historic problems

Annotation Wiki

Annotation

1. The Wiki Modeling Tolerance was created by Darcy Barber during the Spring semester of 2011.


2. This is targeted as a professional developemnt tool, however the Wiki can easily be incorporated using the Interactive Links section for ELA and Mathematics as well as the advocacy links.


3. This Wiki can be utilized as a tool in Character Education and intergrated into subject areas of Technology, ELA, and Social Studies.


4. A goal of this wiki is to encourage examination of learned behavior and to facilitate the modeling of tolerance and diversity.


5. The highly qualified professional benefits from a source of development in intentional and purposful teaching.  As the teacher I have to walk the walk in order to model what I what my students to reflect. The development of tolerance skills through discussion and feedback via a Wiki can be beneficial for the student and the teacher.
