The first digital story that I created is a brief documentation of my personal life. It was designed as a sharing activity and an introduction to digital storytelling. It can be expanded on to demonstrate elementary social studies relating to self, family, and tradition. Another digital story that I created is a narration of the book Wangari's Trees of Peace by Jeanette Winter (2008) I designed this in response to a lesson in character education/social studies that I implemented in my practicum during the Spring semester of 2011. The Field Test Completion is a photostory created with the 4th Grade students in my first official practicum at Cato-Elementary School. The students worked in groups to sequence hard copy photos onto traditional story boards, composed sentences to correlate with the photos and utilized the MLD I provided to add a voice over to their digital photo story. As always, please feel comfortable to contact me at darcy.barber.cortland.edu

Annotation:
1. The projects contained in this file were created by Darcy Barber during the Spring semester of 2011.
2. The grade level targeted for the digital photo story on family and tradition is elementary school grades K-2 with adapatabilty to all of the grades. Wangari's Trees of Peace grades 1-3. The Field Test Completion is a photo story created in my 4th Grade Practicum. The 4th Grade students worked in groups and sequenced hard copy photos onto tradtitional storyboards, composed and narrated sentences to tell their story using Microsoft PhotoStory3 and the Mobile Learning Device I supplied.
3. The intergration of Social Studies, Technology and English Language Arts are evidenced within the characteristics of these tools.
4. As with all of my teaching goals, these projects are developed to reach multiple learners where they are at developmentally and to facilitate assilimation and accomodation of new knowledge. An objective for the use of digital storytelling as evidenced in these projects is to utilize resources and expand on the art of oral storytelling. I find it necessary to state that I purposfully did not edit out the percieved flaws within the my practicum students digital story in part because of the lack of time available to me as a practicum student in their classroom and most importantly because I feel that this is a true documentation of thier very first digital storytelling experience.
5. The use of digital story telling has the potential to encourage the reluctant reader and writer to actively engage with the tool of technology. Digital story telling can be implemented as a term project documenting scientific inquiry, classroom activities, and also can be used as a means to connect with classrooms throughout the community and global world. I believe this media project encourages problem solving skills by the learner in that the creator has to formulate a sequence of the story; beginning, middle and end. The creator has to formulate a narrative to complement the images that are chosen, and the creator of the digital story will most likely find it pleasing enough to want to continue and expand on the initial project of creating digital stories.
6. The links to the three digital storytelling projects are all found on the top of this page.
7. The digital story's that I created are all in .wmv file and the proper plug in is Windows Media Player for PC or Windows Media Player for Mac.
