Introduction to the Program
We believe you have made a wise choice to pursue your graduate education with us. We take pride in our graduates and the impact they have on the counseling profession throughout the state of Louisiana and beyond.
The foundations of the profession are deeply rooted in social justice, wellness, and unconditional positive regard. The training of new professionals is a journey that requires acquisition of academic knowledge, demonstration of counseling skills, and personal growth. Indeed, it is unusual for a student to complete a counseling program without some level of personal introspection and reflection.
Our counseling program strives to provide a supportive and encouraging learning environment with the expectation that faculty and students will be aware of and respect cultural, individual, and role differences. The next two to three years of your life will be filled with many challenges. Congratulations on your decision to enter the highly respected and noble profession of counseling.
The Counseling and Guidance program offers both School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling career options for those interested in becoming a professional counselor. The Louisiana Board of Education for certification has approved the curriculum in School Counseling. The curriculum in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares candidates for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor. These programs are currently seeking accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. The Louisiana Department of Education and the Louisiana Board of Regents have approved both programs. The School Counseling program is accredited by NCATE.
Additionally, the counseling program also offers a degree in Human Services for individuals who desire to enhance their understanding of individuals and skill set for providing assistance, but who do not desire to pursue licensure or certification as a counselor.
