August 18th
7th grade day! Welcome to school!

Meet Mrs. Bates -
Yes that's me and my sweet husband standing by a camel by the pyramids in Giza Egypt. We have been married 41 years! We have 6 children, 8 grandchildren, and three Shetland Sheepdogs. We love to travel and enjoy this amazing planet we live on!
Today we will go over the Disclosure Document and what the class is all about.
Today is your chance to get to know your school and each other.  Hey you'll only be here half the day!

August 19th & 20th
As per the Utah State Science Core Standards for 7th grade Integrated Science - we will study 5 major themes including:
Matter, Structure of the Earth, Cells, Heredity, and Classification.
You can access and download the entire 7th grade core using the link at the bottom of this page if you wish to do so.
~~~
Our first unit will answer questions such as "What is Science?"
We will be learning about the scientific method, experiments, tools of a scientist, observations and inferences, probability, scientific standards, etc.
and yes.... we are going to hit the ground running - lots to do, lots to learn - lots of great, fun and exciting things!!!
   Class Expectations
    Pre-Test  (sorry about that - we have to know where to start)
    Objective Sheets
    Packet stuff
    The Scientific Process
    Observation, Inference & Evidence PPT
    Crime Scene intro.
Here is a bit of information about the Science Article required each term.
The article must be about current science. As a matter of fact we will be providing articles for you to choose from.
You must use the format on the handout for science articles.
You must write a one page summary about the article (if you can’t write a one page summary then your article is too short)
You do ONE of these a quarter - the first one is due September 16th - yes, you can turn it in early
August 21st & 24th
Scientific Processes
Observation, Inference & Evidence PPT
Observation vs. Inference
Qualitative vs. Quantitative
Crime Scene
August 25th & 26th
Sugar Cube Observation Lab
Case of the Sleeping Frog Quiz
Review variables/controls/etc.
DRYMIX
#8 Making a Graph (pgs 19-24)
once a quarter you must to an INQUIRY PROJECT
This is an actual science experiment - you ask the question, you do the research, you design and perform the experiment, you record and analyze your data and make the conclusion - and you put all this info in an awesome powerpoint presentation that shows pictures of YOU actually doing all this stuff.
If you are not in the pictures it won't count!
Then - of course - you will present this to the class - you have 3 to 5 minutes to present...
You do ONE of these a quarter
AND - DON'T FORGET -
I will be assigning you a due date for your presentation -
You MUST do these BEFORE the last week of the term – its worth 100 points if done correctly
Plan on a quiz about mid week. Next week we will finish the packet, do the study stations and have the test. The packet due date will be September 3 & 4 (depending on if you are A or B day).
Also - be sure you are looking for a good Science Inquiry Project for term one. Ideas can be found on www.sciencebuddies.com please choose something worth doing, read the "Inquiry Learning" info on the class website for some guidelines, and try something you would really like to find out the answer to. For instance I won't accept projects on things like "How much salt do I have to add to a cup of water to float an egg" or "What boils faster? Salt Water or fresh water?" I mean seriously - who cares? Make it worth doing. There is an example of a great inquiry project in the Inquiry Project Template on the tab for Important Info. and Documents.
Oh yes, and I see that we are low on paper towels and zip-lock baggies, so I am offering extra credit for unopened rolls of paper towels or zip-lock baggies brought in THIS WEEK ONLY. There is a limit of two items per student.
The Scientific Process packet is DUE on September 3rd (A day) or 4th (B day)
There will be a 2-part test on Scientific Processes on September 3rd (A day) or 4h (B day)
Part of the test will be a hard copy paper test and part will be on online test.
Please remind your students (or yourself) that they are responsible for coming to class on time and being prepared with their science materials each day.
Also, NO food or drink is allowed in the Science classroom. Water is fine, and we have our own private drinking fountain.
We are off to a great start to our 2015-2016 school year! Your children are great! Thanks for sharing them with me!!!
