Favorite colors, mathematics, and technology: after completing this lesson plan in a first grade classroom, students will have a greater understanding each of these subjects. I had the challenging assignment to create a lesson plan using Excel while implementing a variety of mathematic and technology state standards. Through this task I was able to understand the struggles that teachers face as they strive to teach the state standards to their students. Below is the Excel lesson that I created with the needed material attached.
To integrate mathamatic and technoogy standards into an Excel lesson.
Students will collect data on their peers favorite colors, make a tally chart of their data, copy the chart into Excel, make a group pictograph of the data, and present thier graph to the class.
- Concept 1: Data Analysis (Statistics)
- Formulate questions to collect data in contextual situations.
- Make a simple pictograph or tally chart with appropriate labels from organized data.
- Interpret pictograph using terms such as most, least, equal, more than, less than, and greatest.
- Answer questions about pictographs using terms such as most, least, equal, more than, less than, and greatest.
- Formulate questions based on graphs, charts, and tables. Solve problems using graphs, charts, and tables.
- 3T-F2: Use prescribed technology tools for data collection and basic analysis
- PO1: Use a spread sheet or database application to perform simple data analysis
- 1T-F3: Use developmentally appropriate technology resources to access information and communicate electronically.
- PO1: Operate keyboard and other common input devices.
- PO3: Print documents, test, or image.

- Give the students a worksheet containing a tally chart for them to gather information on their peers’ favorite colors.
- Line students up in one single file line. Each child will make their way down the line asking each of their peers what their favorite color is and documenting it on the given worksheet.
- Have the students copy their tally sheet into Excel adding a total column at the bottom of the chart and using SUM formulas.
- Have the students print their spreadsheet.
- Give the student the worksheet containing the questions about the data collected and have them complete it.
- Discuss the worksheet and the students’ finding with them when they are finished.
- After you finish discussing, put the students in groups of three and assign each group three colors.
- In their groups, have them make a pictograph of the data of their assigned colors on butcher paper.
- Have each group present their pictograph to the class using appropriate technology jargon, and ask them questions on their data.
