Importance of Educational Inequality

Thomas, Wang, and Fan's creation of the education Gini Coefficient provided a way to numerically demonstrate the inequality that global education faces. This article brought to light where the inequalities lie, especially with regards to quality of education and distribution of education. Through using the newly developed education Gini, these researchers were able to determine that educational inequality has lessened since the 1960s, yet there is still inequality when it comes to the amount of time spent in formal schooling. These findings show a clear discrepancy between nations' education systems, and that many countries where formal education is not accessible experience more inequality in this realm. All of this information is important in recognizing that educational inequalities exists world wide, and are most directly related to access to education.

India is a great example of the findings that Thomas, Wang, and Fan found in their research. Mint claims that, despite efforts to close the education gap in India, a large portion of the country still remains illiterate. While action has been taken to improve the inequality in terms of access to education, there is still so much work to be done to fully eradicate the educational inequalities. The importance of India working to lessen the number of illiterate and uneducated individuals is what UNESCO officials say is a crucial role because of the size of the country, and everyone must work together to reach the educational goals set by the UN by 2030. The article explains that one of the United Nation's sustainability goals is the make education more available, as well as improving the quality of the education. Working towards these goals would not only benefit India, but other countries where education is low quality and in high demand.

While the United States faces the issue of educational inequality on a far smaller scale than many other nations, it is still something of importance that each country should be striving to improve. Specifically, education is crucial for younger generations, who have the most power to make changes in the world. So many children are prevented from having access to education due to the inequalities throughout the world, and it will take a worldwide effort in order to provide equal education for all.
