Welcome to Standard 5.2: Collaborating with families, colleagues, and community agencies section of my online portfolio.
In this section, I have included various artifacts from my Childhood Education preparation program that show how I have met this standard.
I have included a letter that I created for my Inquiry into Curriculum, Technology, and Teaching course at SUNY Cortland University. I participated and observed at an elementary classroom in Cortland, New York. The letter was created to introduce myself to the student’s parents and/or caregivers, and it provided them with information about who I am, and my professional goals. In the letter I explained my background information about where I grew up, and the schools that I have attended in the past. I also included my beliefs about student learning, and I asked the parents and/or caregivers to share information with me about their child.
The completion of this artifact has taught me about how important it is to create letters that are inviting. I have learned how important it is to communicate with the student’s parents and/or caregivers because it can provide you with new information about that student. It can also provide you with feedback about the student’s likes and dislikes, and this can help the teacher to better accommodate each of the student’s needs. Sending the letter to parents and caregiver is something that I will use in my future classroom, and I will learn information about the student that they might not have normally shared with me. I think this assignment has helped me grow as a professional, and I look forward to having my own classroom.
