Internship
Rationale
Context: I developed several lessons during my internship at Blue Ridge Elementary, with 2nd grade, in Ashe County, North Carolina during the Spring semester of 2008 through Appalachian State University. My cooperating teacher was Ashley Bower and my internship supervisor was Dr. Ellen Pesko.
Impact: The lessons that I developed was a science 5E lesson plan on minerals, a social studies lesson on local government, a multi-text unit on the westward expansion, a reading/fluency inventory, and many different small-group math/reading activities. I also conducted a safety checklist during my time at Blue Ridge Elementary. These lessons and activities enabled me to receive the experience needed to become a more sufficient and experienced elementary education teacher.
Alignment: The internship at Blue Ridge Elementary satisfies the requirements for North Carolina Elementary School Teachers by the following:
Standard 17: Elementary teachers understand safety and liability issues in elementary and advocate for appropriate safety materials and enforcement practices in the classroom.
Indicator 1: I met this indicator by ensuring student safety while taking students on a nature walk, around the school, during a lesson on minerals.
Indicator 3: I met this indicator by locating and knowing the safety laws and codes at Blue Ridge Elementary.
Indicator 4: I met this indicator by modeling appropriate safety behavior while conducting several science lessons.
Indicator 5: I met this indicator by developing a safety plan while taking students on a field trip to Linville Caverns. I gave students a list of safety rules and made sure they were carried out while on the field trip. Some of the rules were as follows: students were to stay with group leaders at all times, no one was to leave the group without asking their group leaders permission, students were to have a partner while on the trip, etc.
