Lesson: Skip Counting by 8
Goals/Objectives:
The main goal of this lesson is to review what it exactly means to skip count by 8’s. I will also relate how important it is to skip count by 8’s and how it relates to multiplication.
Materials: Pencil & Paper
Launch:
I will read the book Each Orange Had Eight Slices by Paul Giganti, Jr. This will help relate the subject to everyday life. I will also relate counting by 8’s to multiplication. Students will need prior knowledge of skip counting.
Explore:
· I will explain to the students how skip counting can be used. I will explain that when people buy a pizza that it usually comes in 8 slices. I will also give other examples.
· I will ask the class “Can you come up with more things that come in 8?” Hopefully the students will say things like an orange, or an 8-pack of pudding, 8-pack of soda, etc.
· Students will then get in groups of 8 to see how many groups we have of 8.
· Next I will have the students say the 8’s rhyme which is written on the board for them to follow along. Two of the students will make a door by holding hands up in the air. Each child will have a turn to go through the door, while reciting the rhyme together.
8, 16, 24, Someone's knocking at the door. 32, 40, 48, ___________ wants to celebrate. 56, 64, 72, Come on in and "How do you do?" 80, 88, 96, and 104, Please put your shoes at the door.
· Once the rhyme is erased, students will skip count by 8's to 104 on a piece of paper.
Summarize:
· After the game is over I will lead the students in counting by 8’s.
· I will then discuss how counting by 8’s can be very time-saving in math problems, everyday life, etc.
