Reading Assessment

Rationale

Context:  I completed this assignment during Block II, in my Development for Literacy for Learning class, under the advisement of Dr. Ellen Pesko.  I assessed a third grade student's reading comprehension, accuracy, and word recognition, while interning at Blue Ridge Elementary.  I asked for a student that was either low to mid reading level.  I then conducted my research on the student using the reading assessment that was provided to me in my Reading 4030 class.

Impact:  I will use this type of assessment with my future students.  This assessment will provide a way for me to help improve my students reading levels.  I will be able to see exactly what a child needs to help him or her improve their reading skills.  This project has helped me better understand the process of reading, comprehension, and word recognition.

Alignment:

Standard I: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in English Language Arts and Literacy.

Indicator 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7: I met these indicators by using different levels of reading to assess the reading levels of a 3rd grade student at Blue Ridge Elementary in Ashe County, North Carolina. I investigated the different levels of comprehension and frequency of each level presented to decide on the reading level of the student.

Indicator 8: I met this indicator by presenting a word recognition in 4 different levels to assess what grade level the child was reading independently at.

Standard 7: Elementary teachers use developmentally appropriate strategies to design and deliver instruction in all areas of the elementary curriculum.

Indicator 6 and 7: I met these indicators by using a reading assessment to find out the reading level of a 3rd grade student. I also analyzed different techniques that would help the student improve in her reading level. I investigated different books that would be appropriate for the student to read independently, so that her frequency would also improve.

Standard 8: Teachers design instructional programs and strategies that build on students' experiences and existing language skills to help students become competent, effective users in language.

Indicator 1,2,3: I met these standards by conducting a reading assessment. During the reading assessment I used a word recognition in context and a word recognition list. I recorded all the information to determine the students reading capabilities. This type of reading assessment can be used with my future students. The assessment can help me to determine my students reading levels, so that I may help them improve on frequency and comprehension.
