Impact Unit: Lesson 3

Rolling Hills (Lg.)

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf

Lesson Plan

Context:  I developed this lesson plan while student teaching during the fall semester of 2008 at Blue Ridge Elementary under my cooperating teacher Martha Anne Wright.

Impact:  This lesson was developed to help first graders compare and contrast the likenesses and differences among two like objects.  Students are also able to construct various patterns during the lesson.

Alignment:  This lesson satisfies the requirements for North Carolina Elementary School Teachers by the following:

Standard 1:  Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in English Language Arts and Literacy.

Indicator 8:  I met this indicator by developing a lesson that used various books to help in students' oral composition processes.

Standard 2:  Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in mathematics.

Indicator 3:  I met the above standard by constructing a lesson that helps students understand the concept of patterns and sequences.  Students were to construct their own pattern and share them with a partner in the group.  Students were to also describe their pattern to their partner.

Standard 15:  Elementary teachers ecourage underrepresented groups to engage in the schooling process, especially in math and science.

I met the above indicator by encouraging all students to participate in the activity.  I paired students together, making sure that all students were paired with underrepresented students, so that they may assist them during the activity.
