Regina Vermina Rolling Vehicle
Rationale:
Artifact- A rolling vehicle that has been designed and tested by my partner, Teresa Craig, and myself.
Context- I developed this rolling vehicle for CI 4401, under the advisement of Jeff Goodman, during Block II of my major in Elementary Education.
Impact- As a future teacher, I will use the Regina Vermina rolling vehicle project as a way of peeking the students interest. Students will design, build, and test their own rolling vehicle. Children will be excited and intrigued to build this type of vehicle. While, developing their own vehicle, they will be broadening their minds. They will be learning essential skills such as: measurement, reporting, using graphs, data tables, etc.
Alignment-This assignment satisfies the requirements for the North Carolina Elementary School Teachers by the following:
Standard 2-Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in mathematics.
Indicator 2- I met this standard by using many different areas of measurement while constructing the rolling vehicle. Areas of measurement used during this project were: length, width, area, capacity, volume, weight, angle, etc.
Indicator 4- I met this standard by developing a report that provided the construction details, test procedure, data tables, graphs, and summary report.
Standard 3-Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.
Indicator 2- I met this indicator by using the knowledge that I have in measuring, analyzing, and reporting the many different areas of this project. I used structure and properties of matter during this procedure. Many factors were involved in developing the Regina Vermina Rolling Vehicle.
Standard 9- Elementary teachers understand and use the processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connection, and representation as the foundation for the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Indicator 4- I met this standard by constructing a vehicle that can be used as a project for my future classroom. The project will allow students to "have fun" developing a vehicle, while allowing students to recognize and apply different areas of mearsurement during the construction.
Indicator 5- I met this standard by making connections and applying mathematical procedures during the construction of the Regina Vermina Rolling Vehicle. The vehicle was constructed by many areas of measurement and supplies to create the full vehicle.
Standard 15- Elementary teachers encourage underrepresented groups to engage in the schooling process, especially math and science.
Indicator 1- I met this standard by creating a vehicle that I can use with my future students. Students will be encouraged to design their own vehicle. This will peek the students interests. Students that are underrepresented will see how science is related to the real-world, while creating a vehicle of their very own!
