Impact Unit: Lesson 2

Autumn Trees (Lg.)

Fall vs Spring

Lesson Plan

Rationale

Context:  I developed this lesson plan during student teaching of the Fall semester 2008 at Blue Ridge Elementary.  The lesson was developed for a 1st grade class under my cooperating teacher Martha Anne Wright.  My supervisor was Dr. Calvin Miller from Appalachian State University.

Impact:  This lesson was developed to help students undertand the importance of using description words and correct grammar through oral communication and writing.  Students will understand and communicate the differences and likeness among the seasons.  Students will also learn to write complete sentences during this lesson.

Alignment: This lesson plan satisfies the requirements for North Carolina Elementary School Teachers by the following:

Standard 1:  Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in English Language Arts and Literacy.

Indicator 5:  I met this indicator by reading a book about Spring and one about Fall that tapped into the students prior knowledge.  The two books helped students with their own writing skills while developing sentences of their own.

Standard 7:  Elementary teachers use developmentally appropriate strategies to design and deliver instruction in all areas of the elementary curriculum.

Indicator 2:  I met this indicator by developing a lesson that used various disciplines while implementing the lesson such as:  language arts, science, art, and social studies.

Standard 8:  Teachers design instructional programs and strategies that build on students' experiences and existing language skills to help students become competent, effective users of language.

Indicator 3:  I met this indicator by encouraging students to think about what they were writing and how it sounds as they read the description sentences back to themselves.

Indicator 6:  I met this indicator by modeling standard English while writing and reading aloud different descriptions.

Standard 12:  Working alone, or with arts specialist teachers and/or other qualified arts professionals, elementary teachers are able to integrate the arts into the elementary curriculum.

I the above standard by developing a lesson that integrated arts into the subject area.  Students were to construct pictures of Spring and Fall that described the seasons using various art materials.
