Clevel Lesson Plan

Rationale:

Context:  I developed this lesson plan under the advisement of Dr. Bryant at Appalachian State University, during the Spring semester of 2007.

Impact:  This lesson introduces a very controversial topic within the social studies discipline.  I feel that this lesson investigates the other side of opinions of the Battle at Wounded Knee.  This lesson is in mind for students 5th grade and beyond.

Alignment:  This lesson aligns with the North Carolina standards for elementary education teachers.

Standard 4:  Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in social studies.

Indicator 1:  I met this indicator by developing a lesson that appreciates world cultures and shows a sensitivity to Native Americans.

Indicator 8:  I met this indicator by introducing and developing a lesson about the history of Native Americans and the controversial Battle of Wounded Knee.

Standard 14:  Elementary teachers develop strategies to address topics that are controversial to diverse groups.

I met this standard by introducing and developing a lesson plan that addresses other opinions of the Battle of Wounded Knee.
