Math Reflections

Meeting (Lg.)

Reflection

Rationale

Context: I developed this reflection during Block II at Appalachian State University, under the advisement of Dr. Art Quickenton. I reflected on three of the lessons in probability that I taught to 2nd graders at Blue Ridge Elementary in Ashe County, North Carolina.

Impact: This reflection helps to show me areas of strengths and weaknesses. The reflection will ultimately help me to see where I need to improve the lessons that I teach to my future students. I am able to see what works and what doesn't work as I am teaching a lesson.

Alignment: These standards below have helped me to meet the requirements for North Carolina Elementary School Teachers.

Standard 2: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in mathmatics.

I met the above standard by investigating the area of probability to develop three consecutive lesson plans to teach during my internship at Blue Ridge Elementary.

Standard 7: Elementary teachers use developmentally appropriate strategies to design and deliver instruction in all areas of the elementary curriculum.

I met the above standard by using different hands-on activities and techniques so that students developed an understanding of probability. Some of those techniques included coin flipping and predictions.

Standard 9; Elementary teachers understand and use the processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connection, and representation as a foundation for the teaching and learning of mathematics.

I met the above standard by having students make connections while doing activities in the area of probability. Students were to make connections with events that might happen, would happen, or impossible. Students were to keep a chart and record the events to see if their predictions were right or wrong.
