Domain C: Analyzing Student Learning & Inquiring into Teaching

Teaching The Penn State teacher continually and systematically inquires into the quality of their teaching and the conditions of schooling in order to enhance student learning and development.

C1. Monitoring and adjusting instruction

The teacher monitors and adjusts instructional and assessment strategies during teaching.

This journal demonstrates my ability to monitor and adjust instructional and assessment strategies during teaching by describing ways in which I changed my science teaching in order to make it more beneficial to students.

C2. Analyzing assessment data

The teacher systematically analyzes assessment data to characterize performance of whole class and relevant sub-groups of students.

This section of my inquiry paper is data analysis. This demonstrates my ability to systematically analyze assessment data to characterize student performance. I used various forms of data, in particular pre and post assessments, to determine my students' level of understanding before and after viewing science podcasts. I analyzed the data in a way that was fair to all students and was able to categorize the performance of the whole class and also the small groups that worked on each podcast.
  2. Math homework grades Math homework grades
This is another grid chart that I use to keep track of students' homework grades in math. This allows me to characterize how the whole class is performing as well as each individual student. With this I am able to check-in with students who may need extra support.
  3. Word Study Grades Word Study Grades
This is a grid chart that I use to keep track of students' wordy study grades. I am able to analyze this data to gage how my students are progressing and understanding vocabulary. I can then focus on students who are struggling and may need extra assistance.

C3. Using data to evaluate teaching

The teacher uses data from his/her own classroom teaching to evaluate his/her own strengths and areas for improvement.

This teaching reflection paper demonstrates my ability to assess my own teaching and evaluate my strengths and goals. It shows my ability to look back and reflect on my own teaching in order to improve as a educator.
  2. Reflection Journal Reflection Journal
The highlighted section of this journal describes a weakness I have seen in myself as I reflect back on lessons. I discuss something I would like to work on for the benefit of my students.

Domain C Reflection

Through reflection and discussion with my mentor and PDA I have been able to learn about the quality of my teaching. Also, by reviewing video tapes of my science lessons I have been able to evaluate myself and find ways to better my teaching to benefit the students. By having more opportunities to teach, I have been able to self-evaluate my own teaching through reflective journals, the exploration of an inquiry project and the assessment sections of lesson plans. Also, reflecting and completing the "intern assessment forms" for conferences with my mentor and PDA have helped me target areas for improvement.I have seen this domain expand with examples of my progress as I have started teaching more lessons and taking on more of a main role in the classroom. I also expect to get better at discussing my strengths and areas for improvement in the future.
