Rationale

Fractions are an important unit. Developing an understanding of and fluency with multiplication and division of fractions and decimals is a state standard. It is also important for students to learn fractions because fractions are a prerequisite for many other subjects, such as physics and algebra. Finally, fractions are practical and applicable to everyday life. People use fractions to measure and describe the world we live in.

Pre-requisite skills

Pre-Requisites

  • Students must be able to fluently add, subtract, multiply & divide positive integers.

  • Students should be familiar with factoring.

  • Students should be familiar with a number line.

Objectives: Using Bloom's Taxonomy and Domains*

  • SWBAT accurately define the following: numerator, denominator, fraction, proper fraction, improper fraction, mixed number, whole number, greatest common factor, reciprocal (remember, C)

  • SWBAT locate 4 proper fractions (with the same numerator) on a number line (apply, CP)

  • SWBAT turn mixed numbers to improper fractions, and vice-versa (apply, CP)

  • SWBAT multiply, divide, add & subtract proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators (apply, CP)

  • SWBAT reduce proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers to their simplest form (apply, CP)

  • SWBAT find relevance in fractions by identifying 2+ ways they use fractions in their everyday lives. (evaluate, A)

  • SWBAT create a graphic organizer (in the form of a 12 page Burrito Book) that contains strategies that will help them solve arithmetic problems that involve fractions (create, CP)
