La Brea Tar Pits

Hours

Guided Tours (for school visits 3rd Grade and up):  Wednesday and Thursday mornings, every half hour between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., and Fridays 9:30 to 10:30 a.m..

Self-guided Tours (all other school groups): Monday and Tuesday, all day; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, after 12:00 noon.

Regular Hours: 9:30 - 5:00 Monday through Friday. 10:00 - 5:00 Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays
Closed: New Years Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

 

Fees

Admission is free to California accredited school groups with reservation at least three weeks in advance.  Chapperone admission (1/10 students) is free also.  Free bus parking on

Note: Teachers wishing to preview the museum, receive one free admission by showing a valid teacher identification.

General Admissions:

Admission is free on the first Tuesday of each month.
Adults: $7.00
Seniors (62 and over): $4.50
Youth (13-17): $4.50
Students (18 and over with valid i.d.): $4.50
Children (5-12): $2.00
Children under 5: free
Members: free

Tours

Guided tours are only available for grades 3-12. K-2 may only take self-guided tours. Guided (Grade 3 - 12)

Guided tours are scheduled every 1/2 hour and available:
Wednesday and Thursday mornings 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Friday mornings 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Guided tours are led by a docent and take approximately 1 hour.

Self-guided (K-12)

Self-guided tours are available:
Monday, all day
Tuesday, all day
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, after 12:00 p.m.

K-2 school groups may only take self-guided tours.  Guided tours are not available to this age group.

Allow one hour for self-guided tours.

Chaperones

One chaperone per ten students.  Chaperone admission is free for reserved school visits.  Chaperones are responsible for student behavior.  No climbing over barracades or touching exhibits.

Size of Groups

School visits should be broken into groups of 20 for guided tours and groups of 30 for self-guided tours.  All will have staggered entry times.
