Indicator 5c

5c. Collaboration results in articulated and well developed career pathways at the secondary and postsecondary levels.

Artifact 34 - examples of how career pathways and dual credit opp. are communicated with students

Career Pathways and dual enrollment opportunities are promoted on four recruitment flyers that are posted in all Family and Consumer Scienecs classrooms and on the Family and Consumer Sciences hall bulletin Board. They are:

  • Course Sequence Chart
  • Get the Facts Poster
  • Promotional PowerPoint - especially slide 7 for Teacher Cadet
  • Recruitment Flyer

Career Pathways are communicated to students as part of the introduction activities the first two weeks of school using the Career Pathways in Education and Training Handout.  This handout is reviewed in late January just before students select their courses for the following year.

In addition, the Shenandoah University letter to parents about dual enrollment is sent home on the first day of the school year.  Students are allowed to switch to the dual enrollment course the first two weeks of school.

Artifact 35 - document collaboration w/ school counselors/career coaches on academic & career plans

Collaboration is essential among staff in a school to best serve students.  The collaborative activities between counselors and  Teacher Cadet include:

  • Our counselors encourage students to use the Family Connections feature on Blackboard to assess their interests and skills, create their resume, and search careers, colleges and scholarships.  I use Family Connections in class to support the efforts of counselors and reinforce the value of the features of the program.
  • Each year, I invite a panel of counselors to speak about their career choice to become a counselor.  This is always a popular activity among the students - see picture.
  • The Career Center Specialist and I work  closely together.  She sends out a monthly newsletter to seniors as they prepare to transition from high school.  I always highlight the messages in her newsletter that pertain to my college-bound Teacher Cadets - see attachment.
  • Scholarship announcements are sent out monthly from the Career Center.  I repost the information about scholarships for prospective teachers on the Teacher Cadet Blackboard site and send an email to the senior cadets to highlight the scholarship - see attachment Scholarship Announcements Posted on Blackboard.
  • Each January, the counselors host an afternoon meeting for all the electives.  As the Family and Consumer Sciences Lead Teacher, I speak about our course offerings from the perspective of what every counselor should know.  When I talk about Teacher Cadet, I emphasize the dual enrollment fee - and the internship experiences.  The three handouts I give every counselor are the Course Sequence Chart. Get the FACS, and Recruitment Flyer - see attachments.
