LibQual Survey Overview

The Mercy College Libraries conducted a LibQual survey in the spring of 2009 administered to all library patrons asking for feedback on aspects of library as place, information access and services.  The LibQual survey is the gold standard survey instrument utilized by libraries across the United States to gather patron perceptions and expections of library service.  The Survey questions are attached here.  From the wide range of responses received,  the library was able to assess its functions and improve service at all levels.

2010-2011 LibQual update:

In order to enhance patron experience and success in using the libraries, the following upgrades and improvements were made in 2010-11 as a result of evaluation of the 2009 Libguide survey:

  • Increased Hours of Operation - We are open longer on the weekend to make library services and resources available to students, especially in the weekend health programs.  Four hours were added in AY 2009/10 and an additional four hours were added in AY 2010/11.
  • Technology Specialist Desk – Due to the increase in reference questions related to technology, we created a centrally located tech desk in spring 2011, manned by trained students to assist students with general troubleshooting.  We will be expanding the program in fall 2011 by hiring a Graduate Assistant to focus on providing specific tech skills training.
  • Loaner laptops – In fall 2010, we acquired 15 loaner laptops for student use in the library.  Due to the huge success of the program (from 455 loans in April 2010 to 1024 loans in April 2011) we have added eight additional laptops in fall, 2011 and will continue to add more as funds become available.
  • Tech Tools – In addition to laptops, we have added additional Flip cameras and tripods as tools available for student loan in fall, 2011.
  • Quiet Zone – Student requests for more quite study space have resulted in re-design and reconfiguration of library spaces in fall, 2010.  Significant spaces and glass walls were added to the upper floor of the library to buffer sound.  Students are actively using these spaces.
  • Service Forms - All circulation, reserve and laptop loan forms have been updated in fall 2011 to make it easier and faster for students to access the material and equipment they need.  Our reserve system in particular has experience significant increase in utilization, expanding from 86 loans in April 2010 to 222 loans in April 2011
