Student Advisory Team (SAT)

As part of its overall assessment plan, in April of 2012, the library formed a Library Student Advisory Team composed of a cross-section of Mercy population to serve as a dedicated focus/consultation and outreach group for the assessment of library and learning center space, services and resources. The first meeting was a rousing success, with students eager to help the libraries address concerns and become more successful. An initial survey was distributed to the group with the results available in the Attachments.

The SAT is structured like a committee with a selected President and Secretary.  The group will meet at least twice a semester at start and fall, with refreshments/lunch funded by Library.

Mission: SAT will provide valuable information to LC staff and faculty on matters relating to:

  • Space utilization and architecture, including group and individual study, seating, lighting, café resources, environmental concerns
  • Information services, access and support for all print and online resources; reference and research needs, learning center services and support
  • Technology resources and support including:  on-going problems and concerns, computer and infrastructure needs (e.g. AC outlets), formal and informal tech training and instruction, device support, multimedia production needs, etc.
  • Programming and marketing of LLC space and resources: feedback on cultural, intellectual, recreational utilization and planning

SAT will be trusted partners and catalysts in the development and enhancement of LLC space, resources and services.  SAT members will have an exclusive creative role in decision making in several areas, to be developed:

  • Select Quite Zone posters  - CART students will design posters reflecting quiet zone goals of silent study (Woody Sullender, CART instructor, is already working on this).
  • SAT will recommend speaker, performer for activity or performance in LLC (e.g. poetry readings, guest lecture, film screening, gaming event, etc).
  • Advise on selections for a “Student Spotlight” area in Galley to display a student poster or creative work
  • Students will be given opportunity to present ppt or other project in Library Instruction Lab

SAT members and Library Faculty Advisors will dialogue and provide feedback in several ways:

  • Formal communication with Faculty Advisors through email or semester meetings on specific issues, ideas and proposals.
  • Informal and spontaneous commentary via twitter, Facebook or other social networks during SAC member’s use of space.
  • SAT members may perform peer-to-peer research and surveying of student body.
  • SAT members may be given cameras to record or reflect on LC spaces and services
  • SAT members will be able to work with “personal” librarians for their own research needs

Survey and Membership:

An initial survey was sent out to SAT members to ellicit areas of concern and interest (attached).  Current membership includes:
