First quarter centers on study and test-taking strategies, reading comprehension, phonics/spelling, analogies, listening comprehension, writing, grammar and usage. While your emphasis in English I is centered on improving your writing, our class will work on other, essential skills to help you succeed.
Attached is a copy of the policy and procedures sheet you received in class. Feel free to refer to it as needed.
JOURNALS: This assignment consists of 24 entries (columns of writing) or approximately 12 pages in your stenographer's notebook. Aim for at least 8-10 words on a line across a page (or 4-5 words on a line across a column) in order to receive full credit for each entry. If you write large, write more entries. To earn extra credit, you may submit the journal early or you may write more than the required 24 entries. If a journal is submitted late (it must be received by the next day) you may receive a maximum of only 50% of the points possible. No journals will be accepted one day after they're due.

Phonics is one of the most critical skills in reading. If you can't pronounce a word, you don't know what it is. If you don't know what a word is, you can't understand the sentence. And that's where problems begin. Also, taking the time to "sound-out" words slows down your reading rate, which causes you to forget what you just read. So to polish-up your knowledge of phonics and to help your reading comprehension, the class will be placing emphasis on this skill.
The following lists contain the phonics/spelling words you'll need to know for phonics tests. Make sure you study the correct spellings and the definitions so you can place the words into sentences that show the word meanings. At the end of 5 lists of words, we will have a unit exam covering all 100 words and definitions.
