Map Lesson Plan for Grade 1

Map Lesson Plan for Grade 1

Context: In the first session of Block II in the summer of 2005 under the direction of Dr. Eric Groce, I created a comprehensive lesson plan about maps for first grade. The lesson plan addresses map skills, geography, and spatial perspectives.

Impact: By creating this lesson plan, I will be able to teach an effective session about maps and the various skills required to read and follow them. I will also be able address standards in mathematics through the use of geometric shapes and ideas.

Alignment:

NC DPI Standard 4:

  • Indicator 10 through creating a lesson plan based on an understanding of physical, regional, and cultural geography and their effects on the relationship between people and their environments.
  • Indicator 14 through applying the map skill and other geographic content to real life situations. The lesson plan emphasized the use of maps for practical purposes and required the consideration of multiple views for solving problems.
  • Indicator 15 through developing spatial perspectives with graph paper as an outline for students to use when creating a map and an aid in understanding a sense of place.
