Geographic Concepts

Context: In the first session of Block II in the summer of 2005 I created a slide show addressing the various geographic themes and elements of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In the computer lab in Edwin Duncan I used Microsoft PowerPoint to create the slide show. The information included in the PowerPoint presentation was found on the Internet. I also created a simple school map using Microsoft Word. The slide show and school map were reviewed by Dr. Eric Groce, the CI 3110 instructor.

Impact: By creating a simple school map, I applied basic knowledge of map schools and can use the same assignment for elementary-age children. After creating a slideshow about Vancouver's geography, I discovered that technology can be used to enhance a learner's experience with geography and in many ways expedite this process of learning.

NC DPI Standard 4:

  • Indicator 6 through the creation of a simple map of a school including on it the important parts of map: legend/key, appropriate symbols, scale, compass rose, and labels. I also created a PowerPoint about Vancouver, BC including the six themes of geography and environmental issues of that area. Those themes are location, place, interaction, movement, regions, and environmental issues.
