Local and National Traditions

Field Trip!

Context: In the first session of Block II in the summer of 2005, my CI 3110 class visited the Appalachain Cultural Museum and experienced local cuisine at the Dan'l Boone Inn under the supervision of Dr. Eric Groce. I also created a brochure using Microsoft Publisher for people who are not familiar with the major holidays celebrated by citizens of the United States of America.

Impact: Because of the field trip, I now know many of the local traditions and the historical significance of the Appalachian area. Through the field trip I experienced local cuisine and arts first hand. I also learned some background about why American Citizens celebrate certain holidays including Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. I will be able to better plan a trip that focuses on local traditions and historical background.

Alignment:

NC DPI Standard 4:

  • Indicator 5 through visiting the Appalachian Cultural Museum we explored the roots and traditions of the area in which we go to school. We got to see and walk through displays of local customs and creations. We experienced local food when we attended the Dan’l Boone Inn for lunch. I learned about national traditions through research and the creation of a brochure explaining a dozen of our national holidays.
