CI 3030 Exam

CI 3030 Exam

Context: In the first session of Block II in the summer of 2005 as a requirement of Dr. Eric Groce, I completed an exam which addressed the basics of social studies. I took the test at home, answering the questions using permissible sources including notes, textbooks, articles found online, and books found at the Watauga County Library.

Impact: Questions from exam #1 were taken directly from Indicator 2. We discussed in length the interdisciplinary nature of social studies, display a knowledge of spatial and temporal concepts and their relationships, we have proven our awareness of the rights and responsibilities of democratic citizenship, and acquired new knowledge in the social sciences. We also had to discuss at length the developmental progression from the individual to the nation. We looked at each grade from K-6 in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and compared it to Paul Hanna’s original Expanding Environments model.

Alignment:

NC DPI Standard 4:

  • Indicator 2 by thoroughly answering questions about the social science disciplines including interdisciplinary nature of social studies and the relationships between spatial and temporal concepts.
  • Indicator 3 by answering questions concerning the developmental progression from the individual to the nation and making comparisons between the NC SCOS and Paul Hanna's original Expanding Environments model.
  • Indicator 7 by thoroughly answering a question concerning basic economic concepts such as supply and demand, trade, and economic systems.
  • Indicator 9 through answering a question concerning the basics of political science including governments and international relations.
  • Indicators 11 and 12 through adapting a lesson plan found online which promotes the basic principles of being a citizen and the importance of developing character while teaching  a historical perspective and fostering a respect and appreciation for enduring traditions.

NC DPI Standard 11:

  • Indicator 3 through the use of a lesson plan which enhances social studies by making connections with scientific discoveries and technological innovations.
  • Indicator 5 through the use of an Xpedition lesson plan which incorporates technology skills in the social studies lesson through collecting, organizing, sorting, and displaying data.

NC DPI Standard 14:

  • Indicators 2 and 3 through the use of an Xpeditions lesson plan which promotes the open-minded discussion of controversial issues and guides students to develop rational solutions for controversial problems.
