Investigating Mathematics Test

Context: In the spring of 2005 in Block I, I completed the Investigating Mathematics and Learning Take-Home Test. Dr. Tracy Goodson-Espy emailed this test to the members of the CI 3030 class. As a part of this test, I pledged that the only information I received to answer the questions came from permissible sources, including the textbook and class notes.

Impact: By completing this test, I elaborated and expounded upon the basics of number sense, numeration, and numerical operation. The test addressed standards set forth by the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. I can use this information to help learners in my classroom who are struggling with the basic principles of mathematics.

Alignment:

NC DPI Standard 2:

  • Indicator 1 by thoroughly answering questions about the fundamentals of number sense, numeration, and numerical operation including the ability to illustrate, explain, and demonstrate principles such as numeration, fractions, decimals, rational numbers and so forth and to apply four basic operations with symbols and variable to solve problems and to model, explain and develop computational algorithms.

NC DPI Standard 9:

  • Indicator 1 through applying the basic understanding of problem solving to new mathematical knowledge, solving problems outside of a mathematical context, and apply a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems.

  • Indicator 2 through displaying an ability to instruct children in a way that enables students to recognize reasoning as fundamental and make and investigate mathematical conjectures.
  • Indicator 4 by developing the ability to instruct children to recognize and make connections among various mathematical ideas, to understand how mathematical ideas are interconnected and build on one another, and to apply mathematical concepts outside of a math lesson.</FONT>
