Math Box

Context: In the first session of Block II in the summer of 2005 I created a math box under the instruction of Professor Art Quickenton. Together Heather Wicker, Emily Dagenhardt, and I compiled lesson plans, activities, and manipulatives addressing the NC Standard Course of Study for Mathematics Competency Goal 3: Geometry for Kindergarten through Grade 2. We found information in the Education Room in Walker Hall on the campus of Appalachian State University, at the Watauga County Library, and on the Internet.

Impact: As a future teacher, I will be able to pull from this box at least three lesson plans for each objective under each Competency Goal 3 in the NC SCOS for grades K-2. I will also be able to pull at least three activities for each objective and can easily access a list of literature and other outside sources to aid in the teaching of geometry in those grades.

Alignment:

NC DPI Standard 2:

  • Indicator 2 through the completion of three lesson plans for grades K-2 concerning simple geometric figures, concepts of relative position and relationships, and appropriate measurement systems in various settings such as length, perimeter, volume, and angle.
