September 13, 2013

This past Wednesday, Emily, our Farm and Garden teacher met us out in the yard beside the garden. There, in a circle in the shade we passed around the talking piece (which happened to be a beautiful heirloom potato) and shared our favorite way to eat potatoes. Then, she read to us "The Enormous Potato" and we learned that poatoes have eyes, and unlike us, often more than two!  From there, we discussed the upcoming annual Harvest Feast and the role we will play. We will be preparing potatoes in some form. Firstly, however, we needed to harvest them from our school garden! We were off, and found a plentiful bounty. Some were big, some small, some were round and others had strange shapes. Together with trowels, sunshine, earthworms, and ladybugs, we proudly filled our bucket with spuds.

The Black Bats make Gnocci!

On Wednesday, We ventured down to the "Red House" to start on some projects for the Harvest Fest on October 9th. We made Gnocci! First we observed our ingredients and reviewed our recipe. Next, we "smashed" our harvested potatoes. We formed this into a volcano and poured separated eggs inside. We mixed with our hands and added flour, salt, pepper, baking soda, and nutmeg. Then we rolled our balls of mixture into long snakes, and cut into Gnocci parts! Emily boiled some Gnocci and mixed with butter to have a sample of all our hard efforts. The reviews were mixed, some thought it tasted delicious, while others weren't so sure!
