Celebrating the Harvest and Thanksgiving!  Today we passed around an example of multicolored harvest corn.  We talked about the various textures we felt and described all the colors we saw.  We related this corn to the first Thanksgiving between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans, and the significance of corn for the Pilgrims.  Black Bats practiced cutting and gluing skills to create their own harvest corn collages.  Each student drew and cut out corn and husks, and used colorful mosaic squares as decorative kernels, then attached this to a corn stalk!

Today in art our Black Bat artists completed their uniquely designed mittens.  Such interesting line design and colorful patterns!  Some students pursued creating a pattern even further- with exciting realizations that a pattern can actually be challenging to follow and not necessarily repeating itself every two or three times.

We reviewed our knowledge of line and shape, and today introduced texture!  We discussed what texture is and came up with different examples of soft, smooth, rough, bumpy, slimy…..

Students used an assortment of floral texture plates with paper and crayon to create interesting textures and color combinations.

A ‘mitten’ project!  Today in art we read ‘The Mitten’ by Jan Brett.  The students designed their own mittens- the challenge being to design a mitten that will stand out against a snowy white background and never ever get lost!  Each student used a mitten tracer to trace the shape of a mitten onto colored paper of their choice, then, designed their mitten focusing on line and pattern.  We discussed horizontal and vertical lines and everyone gave an example of a pattern.  We used pencils to draw our lines and used oil pastels to create patterns of color in the lines.

After tracing, cutting, and gluing more geometric shapes, the shape puppets are complete.   Black Bat artists have created very interesting puppet characters!
