Today Bat artists created ‘Color Waves’! – a fun abstract art project that included discussion/review of shape, texture, line, and pattern in art. Students drew wavelike shapes out of 6-7 construction paper sheets of varying color and overlapped these in an interesting presentation. So many different waves in the water!

Back to work on composition in art! We are gaining an understanding of a basic concept of depth in artworks; foreground, midground, and background. Bat artists continued work on their aspen tree landscape. Today those who had completed the masking tape tree trunks/branches and watercolor painting, peeled away the tape revealing lots of white aspen trees. Students colored these in and added details. Then, began working on drawings of choice with subject matter incorporating a foreground and a background.

Black bats travelled to Driggs today to visit with and observe snow sculpting artists at work! The snow sculpting art competition is in full swing! Bats toured the site, spoke with artists about their themes, observed all the different tools and how they are used, and then had an opportunity to try sculpting with an assortment of tools on snow blocks of their own. It was inspiring to see the large scale professional works, and then try this process and medium ourselves.

Welcome back Bats! Our activity today introduced composition in art. We looked at different examples of artwork showing foreground and background, and began creating ‘aspen forest landscapes’. Students applied different sizes and lengths of masking tape to paper; these will be our tree trunks and branches. We focused on where the base of each tree begins in the picture, remembering that some trees will be closer in the picture than others. Thus, the pieces of tape are placed in different areas on the paper. Bat artists then painted the landscapes with watercolor. Next we are excited to peel off the tape and observe what is revealed!
