We really enjoy the small group time of centers, as it targets the exact area of instruction for groups with similiar abilities. This week, the two independent stations required kids to focus on applying their knowledge of 1 to 1 correspondence when counting. The third station was direct instruction from the teacher in literacy awareness.

1. Snowman Glyph: Kids use reading skills, fine motor with cutting, and teacher help to follow specific directions and build their snowman. A very fun and challenging exercise.

2. Bubble Fish: This is an independent game where kids get extra practice at one-to-one correspondence and counting. Some students worked on 1-10, while others counted the tricky teens!

3.Writing holiday Vocabulary:  Equipped with a clipboard and sharp pencil, kids are able to transfer print onto paper. Accomodations were made for some students to cut and match pictures and words instead.  This strengthens emergent reading strategies at the same time!

This week, the two independent stations required kids to focus on applying their knowledge of 1 to 1 correspondence when counting. The third station was direct instruction from the teacher in literacy awareness.

1. Batter Up!: Kids pair up and play this board game, where they move from start to end, by solving addition problems.
2.  Literacy Concepts with the teacher: Small groups of students work on literacy skills by doing activities that strengthen the level they are at. Some groups played sight word bingo, while others matched maipulatives to the initial sound card.

3.Christmas Shape Measuring: Students are introduced to the terms estimate and actual and use the non-standard measuting tool of unifex cubes to measure difference Christmas shapes. First students make an educated guess about how many they think it will be, then they measure and record the actual number.

The third station was direct instruction from the teacher in literacy awareness.

1. I-Spy Rice Bags: This is a fun way to search and find letters or sight words. Kids dig through their bags and record letters and words they find.
